Keep a US phone number active abroad.
A low-cost wireless plan with tested Wi-Fi calling is usually a stronger anchor for banks and account recovery than porting immediately to VoIP.
The FCC explains that eligible consumers can keep a number when changing providers in the same geographic area. Portability does not mean every destination service can host every number or preserve its verification behaviour.
Carrier mobile route
Compare low-cost prepaid and monthly providers on Wi-Fi calling, SMS over Wi-Fi, international roaming, activation location, eSIM replacement and account-payment continuity. Enable and test Wi-Fi calling before leaving when required.
VoIP and number parking
US numbers can often be ported to VoIP or parking services, which can be useful for calls and number ownership. Banks and platforms may identify the number as VoIP and refuse verification messages. Treat this as a deliberate trade-off, not a like-for-like mobile replacement.
Use two numbers when needed
For a long-term move, a resilient pattern is a low-cost US carrier number for legacy high-risk accounts plus a local carrier number for the new country. A travel eSIM can supply data but usually does not replace either identity anchor.
