UNIVERSAL DECISION FRAMEWORK
Choose the number type before the provider.
The right answer is usually a small system—identity recovery, an anchor mobile number and a data connection—not one magical global number.
1. Classify the job
Use a carrier-issued mobile number for the highest-risk bank, government and security tasks. Use hosted, app or VoIP numbers for calls, work or compartmentalisation only after accepting their verification limitations.
2. Calculate sustainable cost
Include monthly price, mandatory recharge, activity, roaming, replacement SIM, payment method, porting and the cost of losing the number. A plan you can maintain for years is cheaper than the lowest headline price.
3. Verify five facts
- What number type will the destination service assign after porting?
- Can activation and replacement happen from your location?
- What exact activity prevents expiry?
- Can you port the number back out?
- Does your named institution have current evidence—not a universal provider claim?
4. Build recovery outside SMS
Add passkeys, authenticator apps, recovery codes, trusted devices and a backup email wherever supported. A phone number should be one recovery layer, not the only one.
5. Avoid unsafe shortcuts
Do not use public receive-SMS sites for personal accounts. Do not buy numbers of unclear origin, share live OTPs, or use a number to evade identity, residency or platform requirements.
