Keep a European mobile number active abroad.
Europe is not one phone-number market. Portability, prepaid registration, inactivity, roaming and residency rules remain country and provider specific.
Identify the national regulator, the current carrier's inactivity and roaming policy, and the destination provider's port-in and identity requirements. Do not infer one country's rule from another.
Inside and outside the EU/EEA
Roaming arrangements can make regional travel easier, but they do not guarantee indefinite primary use abroad. Long-term or predominant use may trigger fair-use controls. Outside the region, cost and suspension risk can change materially.
A resilient two-number pattern
Keep a low-cost carrier mobile number from the original country for legacy high-risk accounts, then add a local carrier number for the country where you live. Use data eSIMs only for connectivity.
